The History:
In 1856, James Philip, proprietor of the North Wellington Mills and Distillery built a gracious stone home overlooking his enterprises on the Grand River.
The house stood as an impressive private residence until an unfortunate night in November 1917, when the mills housing the Bissell Farm Implement Co., suffered a devastating fire.
Then owner of the house, William Snyder, offered it temporarily to T.E. Bissell, the proprietor of the farm company. Bissell moved his administrative staff into the house and re-established his company. He eventually bought the house, which remained the company offices until its closure in the 1930s.
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, a number of similar industries occupied the property. In the 1950s, the house became a private residence, until the 1990s when it was transformed into the bed and breakfast formerly known as the Old Bissell House.
In 2004, Christopher Craig and David Bluhm purchased the property and re-christened it “Tynavon”.
